What is a Domain Name?
Domain names were designed to give a “humanly memorable name” to computers, networks and services according to Wikipedia.org. They are used as host identifiers which in turn appear in URLs (uniform resource locators). They also represent ownership of an internet resource. By providing a memorable name to a numeric internet source, a domain name provides a unique identity. Historically, naming sources of numeric value preceded the internet. The Domain Name Register was established in 1983 to require registration of names in order to maintain a centrally organized database. Today, the DNR is run by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers which authorizes companies (registrars) to register domain names for people, businesses, or other internet entities.
There are top-level domains which end in .com, .net, and .org and are considered the highest level of domain names. There are also second-level and lower level domain names. Country codes from the ISO-3166 are used in domain names as well to indicate where the URL is hosted and what country it is operating in. According to Wikipedia.org, the first commercial domain name was registered in 1985. By 1992, roughly 15,000 domain names were registered in the DNR. By 2009 there were 192 million domain names and counting. 11.9 million of those registered in 2009 were online stores, retail, and ecommerce sites. Rounding out the number was 1.8 million sports sites. The .com TLD is the most common top level domain type with more registered than any other TLD type. .gov, .edu, are also two popular types but don’t come close to the .com TLD.
How to pick a great domain name
One of the biggest factors that determines whether or not people will utilize a business’s services is convenience. If a store is conveniently located, more people will shop there. No matter how good your products or services are, no one will patronize your business if they cannot find it. In the same way, no one will visit your website if they cannot find it. That is why companies today put so much effort into making sure that their sites come up very early in a search.
One of the biggest determining factors in how soon a site comes up in a search is the domain name. The reason this is the case is the fact that people have a tendency to search for certain words or phrases on the internet. If your domain name contains one of those words that people are searching for, there is a good chance they will find your site. Of course, if there are too many domain names similar to yours, it may be hard to stand out.
On the other hand, if your domain name is too obscure, no one will think to search for it. There are a lot of facets to choosing your domain name. It is a surprisingly complicated process. Even if you can come up with the perfect domain name for your company, there is an extremely good chance that it is already taken.
As every domain name can only have one owner, you will have to select a different one if you find out your idea is already taken. People have tried a variety of different ways to work around this difficulty. One option is changing the domain name just enough to be able to use it. You can add an extra letter, number, syllable, or word to make it acceptable. This works a lot of the time, but it is not necessarily the best idea in all situations. For one thing, domain names that are too similar to other domain names tend to confuse people. Of course, there is a good chance that customers will end up at your website by mistake, but that is seldom a good thing. That is why, many people choose to come up with domain names that are completely unique. This sometimes requires you to make them fairly lengthy, as most of the obvious and simple options have been used.
There is one more option for obtaining domain names. You can buy them from various websites that sell domain names that are about to expire. The previous owner of the domain name stops paying for the rights to it, enabling anyone to buy it. Domain names that were previously attached to very successful, well-known websites have been known to sell for a lot of money. If your business is strictly an online business, you need to be especially mindful of the quality of your domain name.

If you do not do this then you could find yourself in some serious trouble, and this is not the situation you want to be in. In no time at all you can usually find yourself in a pretty good position, but only if you are willing to move forward responsibly.
As you move towards starting up a business you should look at available Domain Names in order to figure out whether or not you will be able open this business in a way that is going to make sense. There are a number of different choices one could make, but ultimately you really need to look at all of the available options you have. There are a lot of different groups out there who might try and sell you a domain for too high of a price, and this is something that you really need to keep in mind. Moving forward can be difficult sometimes, but you are going to need to look at everything carefully, because otherwise you could get into some trouble.
